lyrics

I dreamt of Nash again last night.
He was smiling like a child.
He was pantomiming paradise.
His hair and beard were wild.

He was preaching in the desert.
I passed him right on by.
I was seeing to my pleasures.
I was eager to get high.

I dreamt of Nash again last night.
It happens now and then.
He was drinking in the plaza
with three or four girlfriends.

He motioned me to take a seat.
I did not sit down.
I don't know why I passed on by
till I was far from town.

I dreamt of Nash again last night.
He was building a canoe.
The stars were bright and they cast a warmth.
It seems strange, I know, but it was true.

"Where you going with that thing?"
I asked my long-lost friend.
"Down the river, Reed, old boy.
And the river has no end."
