The Winds of Chicago

The winds of Chicago
blow low like a cello
driving many a fellow
into losing his mind.

But the churches are pretty
like the crowns of the city
and it’s really a pity
that the winds aren’t more kind.

When I left my hometown
my ma made a sad sound.
My pa hung his head down,
said “Leave if you can.”

So I grabbed my guitar.
And I followed the north star.
And said, “God, from where you are
Do I look like a man?”

The back alleys and pawnshops,
good lovers and bad cops
And the snow on the sidewalk
and the sweet sound of song.

San Francisco’s for hurting.
New York’s full immersion.
Chicago for certain
will be there when they’re gone
